If the art world is beginning to acknowledge the developments of contemporary art in India, its key contenders however tend to remain less known, and have not yet gained the media exposure that their Chinese counterparts earned more than a decade ago. One of the artists that has been a leading figure challenging the boundaries of contemporary art, and taking up Nalani Malani’s legacy in establishing women as artists in their own right is the sculptor Anita Dube. Born in 1958, and based in Delhi, her work reaches far beyond sculpture, and addresses numerous sensitive issues reflecting India’s multi-cultural society.
