Chinese Buddhist Art: Gianguan Auctions, 8 June 2018

With a growing reputation for offering Chinese religious art at accessible estimates, Gianguan Auctions is presenting a selection of Chinese religious art in bronze, jade and ceramics in its Saturday, June 9 sale.

A highlight is a Northern Zhou seated Buddha, height 36.8 cm, Lot 213 and is expected to fetch more than $20,000. Equally dramatic is an enameled gilt bronze Shakyamuni Buddha of the Ming dynasty. The seated figure is dressed in a turquoise robe enhanced with pink and red flowers and scrolls within a matrix of fine wire, Lot 206, engraved with a Ming-dynasty Yongle six character mark, and the estimate is $15,000. A Northern Wei carving of Sakyamuni Maitreya in jade seated on a plinth carved with lions and buddhas, Lot 221, height 33.7 cm, has an estimate of $8,000. A large jade carving of a Sakyamuni Maitreya stands 20 inches tall and weighs more than 1,00 grams – Lot 205, it is expected to sell for $6,000 upwards.

A polychromed Northern Qi stone figure of Sakyamuni Buddha seated in dyanasana on a lotus pedestal supported by a base has a mandorla framing the head, height 41.9 cm, is Lot 211 and is estimated $3,000.
