Ajolie Ela Menon

Born in 1940, Anjolie Ela Menon is today one of India’s most accomplished contemporary artists. In the 1950s she had her first solo shows in Mumbai and Delhi then moved to Paris in 1961/62 to study at the Ecole des Beaux Art on a French Government scholarship.Β  Often Indian in subject, her beautiful work reveals a deep sensibility, diversity and yet profoundly individual. Menon is also a well-known muralist and has represented India at the Algiers Biennale, the Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil and three triennials in New Delhi.Β  She has also had over 35 international solo shows. In September 2006, Menon was invited to participate in a group exhibition at the London Sitaaray Art Camp hosted by Chor Bizarre restaurant in Mayfair, which was specially designed and curated by Sushma Bahl for the British art scene to meet many iconic Indian artists under one roof. The following interview looks at the role of female artists in India, as well as her views on the current boom in Indian art. The artist currently lives and works in Delhi.
